Sketches by Sir Russell Drysdale [manuscript]. 1978.

Sir Russell Drysdale drew a sketch of himself as an Australian private schoolboy; his wife Maisie as a private schoolgirl; and another sketch of the two of them together. The sketches are drawn inside a copy of "The public school phenomenon" by Jonathan Gathorne-Hardy, London, Hodder & Stoughton, 1977.

Maisie (then Newbold) studied art at the George Bell School, Melbourne in the mid 1930s. Fellow students included Peter Purves-Smith and Russell Drysdale. Maisie married Purves-Smith in 1946. Prior to his participation in WWII he had begun to develop a name for himself as a talented and innovative artist.
